A racing and repetitive mind is just below the surface. It might not have reached the depths that someone in depression has reached, but at the same time, you will see common traits. In fact, all of us are just a few stressful events away from mental problems. Cumulative stressful events take their toll on everybody unless, of course, we have some understanding of thought processes and can better oxygenate our brain.
In our sophisticated Western world with its emphasis on intelligence and the stigma on mental problems, normal healthy people who go through periods of being down or depressed have few outlets through which to seek help. Addressing this deficit early on is the key to reversing it. My interest in this area stems from having both asthma and a racing mind for many years. By using the Buteyko Method to reverse my asthma and by improving my awareness, I also addressed my racing mind.
Thousands have attended my courses in Ireland and abroad for asthma and other conditions. Those who have attended for panic attacks, depression, stress and anxiety have reported very good feedback; hence, this book. This book can be read by someone with poor concentration, or a clouded and depressed mind. Pickup not available. Add to list. Add to registry. About This Item. While the science behind the Buteyko method is sketchy at best , I set aside my own skepticism and approached this book with an open mind. Having already been duped by a self-proclaimed holotropic breathwork guru in the past, I figured I won't invest anything more than the cost of one book sans CD - I assume it got lost in the mail until I see whether this works for me.

Overbreathing is presented as a catch-all cause for a number of diseases, to which reduced breathing is the one and only panacea.
Let's put aside for a second that the "overbreathing causes depression" line of reasoning is not only scientifically and medically inaccurate but pretty damn disrespectful; the condescending tone, gross generalizations, oversimplifying of day-to-day life, and ceaseless repetitions of things that are factually wrong are so off-putting that I had trouble finishing this book, let alone getting anything of value out of it.
The assertion towards the end of the book that "if this doesn't work for you, you're not trying hard enough" is a patronizing way of saying "it's not me, it's you", even though there is no scientific evidence that underbreathing can cure anything.
Alleviate symptoms, maybe, since it gives your mind something to do, but that's about where it stops. Yes, there is some benefit in focusing on one's breath - a number of meditation and mindfulness techniques are based on it. Breathing from the tummy is nothing new to me, and neither is stepping out of your thoughts and into your body. You can get information on these things from any number of freely-available websites and even in-person courses out there.
